Re: Running Warm

Bill,
Been thru all this.......got the tee shirts and check stubs to prove it.
What are u using for a temp gauge?
What you need to do is put u in a high performance water pump to circulate the water faster thru the radiator. DO NOT use a 160 thermostat. If you do achieve this temp your engine will run like a 3 legged dog anyway..
Get a high performance 180 thermostat. DO NOT drill holes.
Hope you do not need a shroud. But that is next.
Ollie
PS..mistake one...needed a aluminum radiator, mistake two, thicker is not better, bigger is the answer. Now my critics will say..its only a 318 and the factory stuff worked many years........and the answer is VERY simple.......it will only get worse as this new & improved fuel..E85 hits the streets....

I checked the new t-stat in a pan on the stove first. It was actually
running hotter with the previous t-stat in it then I changed it. I did
add some water wetter.

By the way Wetter Water really does work. Id try some with your case (and a

My thought was more cores, more water capacity, more cooling capacity.

When I get moving again, the temp will come right down, but it's still
reading a little high compared to the 3-core.

I'm wondering if I'm going to have to spend the $ for a shroud, and a
Flowkooler water pump.

Why did you go from a three row to a four?
Sometimes a thicker core will run hotter because airflow is restricted
more
with the added thickness.

I installed a new and now my Coronet is definitely running warmer than
it should.

Here's the list...
318 Poly, Mild cam, 4-bbl
New 4-core copper radiator (US Radiator)
New 180 deg thermostat
New 16LB cap

No known issue with the water pump.
7-blade fan w/ clutch (seems to be working) ~1 inch from the rad.
No fan shroud

I swapped the previous 3-core radiator out because it was leaking.
With the 3-core setup (no shroud) it never got as hot as fast as it
does now. In fact after sitting just a few minutes at a light, this
4-core gets as hot as the 3-core rad did on only the hottest days in
July/August.

I know the lack of a shroud is 1 problem, but I just can't shell out
$250 +$50 for mounting hardware for it right now.

Considering I basically swapped only the rad, it should be acting
better than this.

Any thoughts?
