Re: 1963 Polara 500s?

There were also three built that were Max Wedge hardtops, that were trim delete cars.(missing the large cast gravel shields on the quarters, mirrors, etc.) Race intended.
I saw a story about one in Popular Hotrodding in the early 80's.
I have the story, somewhere, with a photo of the car.
It was owned by a guy in California with an auto shop.
I tried contacting him by phone, but the number was no longer any good.
I'd never heard of the cars until I saw that magazine.
I guess it was true.
If not, someone went to a lot of trouble just welding up all the holes for the quarter trim.

28,500 1963 Polara 500 convertibles? Way off base!

A total of 5,676 Polara 500 hardtops and 1,580 convertibles were built
for 1963 - all in the U.S.A. As to how many exist - who knows?
There are x number registered in the U.S., x number in Canada, x
number in other countries plus x number hiding in garages, barns and
fields all over the world. Could be any number from 1 to 1,580.

According to Galen Govier 5 MaxWedge convertibles were built.

Hi all,

Anyone here have an article or remember reading it, apparently from a recent "Musclecar Enthusiast" magazine,
quoting 28,500 1963 Polara 500 convertibles made and that supposedly only 5 1963 Polara 500 convertibles are known to exist. (I did not think Musclecar Enthusiast magazine was still in business, as I recall it became Auto Enthusiast, formerly Cars and Parts.)

Anyway, this production number seems off to me. A fellow told me that's what he read, but a source I looked at a while back (can't recall where) claimed only 7,256 Polara 500s were made in 1963 -- of both hardtops and convertibles. Which makes more sense to me. (Somewhere around that 7,256 figure anyway, depending on source material used.) Maybe the article meant 5 max wedge Polara 500 converts?

Anyone?

Thanks,
Gary H.
