RE: Cash for clunker cars

I wonder who thought this was a good idea... heaven forbid you might reclaim
some of the tax dollars spent on the vehicle by reselling the engine to
another taxpayer who may not have the financial resources to junk their
older car. Our friends in Washington evidently don't realize that not
everybody can just trot down to the dealer and drive out with a shiny new
payment book. Or perhaps donate the vehicles to non-profits who need to
upgrade but can't afford to?

Quote:

In order to receive federal reimbursement for the subsidy consumers get for
trading in their cars, dealers must first destroy the engine. One common
method is to drain the car's oil and flood the engine with sodium silicate,
or liquid glass. Dealers then turn the car on and rev the engine to let the
solution harden. In just a few minutes, the car becomes inoperable.

Kinda makes me feel sick just thinking about it...

The article does go on to say that the liquid glass process is not required
on imported vehicles as they won't last that long anyway.

Okay, it didn't really say that. :P

Had a local car show today and learned a interesting bit of info from a
buddy of mine. I have no reason to doubt it. ....BUT..in a court of law it
would be "hear-say"
All cars traded in on the program must have all the oil drained...a pint of
liquid glass put in....car started until the engine freezes up.....
Also cars must secured in a locked yard so nothing can be removed or
tampered with...until there final death at the crusher....
