It is compressed, and the mp3s do lost some quality compared to the
originals, whatever the format.

But...  You probably won't notice.

Part of the way it gets compressed is by throwing out the sounds you
can't hear.  Highs and lows outside the range of human hearing, parts
of harmonics that your ear just doesn't hear, etc.  The process also
has a quality setting called "bit rate", similar to the high/low
quality settings on a VCR.  If you use a higher bit rate setting, it
will sound better.  192kbit is probably the minimum I'd use these
days.  The trade-off is that it will take up more space on your
computer's disk.  But then, disk space is super cheap these days
anyway...

Exactly.  MP3s are super convenient and unless you're listening to a
good set of speakers in a quiet room, you won't notice the difference,
especially in an old car with the windows down.
