Hi Skyler,
I think that what you have is commonly called, weak torsion bar
syndrome.
If in order to get the lift required (or desired) and you have to crank
the adjuster almost all the way, the bar is weak and from 47 years of
being twisted has gotten used to being twisted like that.
I don't know what will happen with the bar twisted that much in the
adjuster but I would worry that there is little suspension left and
perhaps the bar may break.
New bars can be purchased and installed and still leave the other items
on your wish list for the future.

I've been driving on it this way for several years now. I keep
thinking I'm gonna order new
torsion bars but then I start thinking reinforced control arms would
be nice.. and maybe new pivot pins
and bushings and maybe some of those adjustable strut rods while I'm
at it... who am I kidding , I can't afford all that ...
anyway I'm still driving on it... sometimes wondering if I am
flirting with disaster or not?
