I use both , the proper tool or sometimes some wide pliers with
grooves in the bite part. the grooves help hold the edge of the cup.
hold the back of the pin to the backing plate, push down with the
pliers and once the pin comes thru the slot give  a little twist,it is
one of those 3 arm jobs in a way
