Re: Iron 4-barrel intake ideas (273)

You can use some of the later 318 heads on the early 273 which will give you endless choices on an intake - both aluminum and boat anchor.

Jim if I was you I wouldn't be cutting up that 65 4-barrel intake. They're kind of hard to find. I have one here from a 65 Dart and I've had numerous offers to buy it but it's been promised to my buddy for his 65 Barracuda that I sold him. The bolts are smaller and the angle that the bolt holes are drilled at are different on a 64 or 65 273 than any other 66 or newer LA engine. To the best of my knowledge nobody ever made aluminum intake for a 64 or 65 273. I have heard that you might be able to make a newer intake work by reworking the holes. And I suppose you could change your heads to newer ones. Any thoughts here Don?

I bought a '65 4-barrel intake for my '64 Valiant on impulse, and it's the stock iron "boat anchor."

Has anyone seen one of these lightened? I thought about cutting out the webs to open up the space below the intake. This would lighten the whole affair, and isolate the intake a bit from the engine's heat. I would need to fabricate a valley cover then, and that would probably be the "fun" part.

I am not opposed to looking for a nice aluminum intake, like the Weiand, or Offenhauser and passing this lump on to someone who loves it for what it is.

Just a thought.
