My reply was in the context of putting the for-sale sure-grip and desired lower gear into his existing 741 case.

It would be foolish to invest the several hundred dollars in bearings, r&p, and labor need to do this into the weakest case they made. Particularly when 742 or 489 cases can be had for under a hundred bucks, even on evilbay.

THEORETICALLY that's true, but I have a friend of mine with a 69 Dart,
383, 727, 4.10's, street slicks, running 11.85's using a 741 case
without any issues. The car is on the street and he uses the gas pedal
like an on-off switch.

He has has a 69 Satellite, healthy 440, 4spd he drives the same way
with a 741 case in it...no problems there either.

I would get a larger pinion case if you can find one easily, but don't
think your 741 is going to grenade the first time you hit the gas.

Furthermore, unless you have some good used gears or NOS gearsets, 741 ring

The Chrysler 8 3/4 guide penned by a person nicknamed Vaanth is essential
reading - Google it.  It explains clearly the different cases and their
strengths and weaknesses.  If you want to go for a sure-grip - which is a
great idea - I'd look for a 742 (my choice) or a later 489 case (biggest
pinion stem). Either of these will be more than adequate unless your 440 is
a really wild one.
