I have a compressor, but what I found the easiest for me with the heads off the engine was to mount the heads to my engine stand and use the flat bar type which bolts to the rocker shaft holes. I also welded a piece of half inch steel pipe to the bar for better leverage. This is how I did the head for my 426. This technique can also be used with the heads still on the engine....the "C" clamp style can only be used off the motor. I have used the air-in-the-plug-hole method, too. You have to be careful witht his method as it's easy to push down on the valve and break the air seal.
