Re: steering column coupling




I used some wood working clamps to hold mine; the sliding bar clamps that  
you squeeze the grip to tighten up.  That being said, they didn't work that  
well.  The coupler just doesn't have enough surface area on the one end to  for 
the clamps to get a good grip on.  I think the only thing that  saved me was 
the fact that I reused the original "lid" so it was just a matter  of tightening 
up the already bent tangs.
 
Here's an idea though.  Make some sort of "press" to hold it  all together 
while you bend the tangs over.  Something like a  small piece of scrap plywood, 
or metal plate, on each end and use long  bolts/nuts to draw the two end 
pieces together.  Of course you'd  have to cut holes and/or slots for the steering 
shaft etc.  It  wouldn't take much pressure to hold it all together, so the 
materials and  hardware could be fairly lightweight stuff.  And the whole thing 
could  probably be made small enough that the job could be done with steering  
column mounted in the car.  I think you'd get the best results  with the 
steering column out of the car though......  As I said, just  an idea.
