It is thin anodized aluminum just like the grill and the side trim pieces.

Just a heads up. I experimented on a spare Coronet headlight door that was
milky white from weathering. Started cleaning with mineral spirits and 00
steel wool. Next with 000 and finally 0000 steel wool. I then sprayed clear
gloss lacquer on it and it really looks good. I would guess that a two part
clear coat would be even shinier and a lot more durable.
