You cannot re-register Black/Yellow plates to a car. That is, if they are off another car, they can't be put back on your car no matter what the year and sticker say. If they're on the car they can stay, however.

You can register Yellow/Black plates to any pre-63 car as long as you have the right sticker.

But CA does not have a YOM program for 1963+ cars.

See this link from the previous post, but alas, you are out of luck, you are stuck with whatever plates are on your car now.

My 62 Chrysler and 58 Edsel have the 63 Black/Yellow plates because they've been on the car since the beginning.

My 59 Edsel has Yellow/Black plates that I got the DMV to clear and get back on the car. No clue where they came from, but they had the 59 sticker on them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

I'm trying to get the California DMV to allow me to put black/ yellow letter plates on my '68 vehicle. The plates are cleared but DMV is telling me these plates have to be once registered to this same vehicle, which they were not.

How's everyone else doing it? I was told that as long as the plates are cleared (not currently registered) they can be transferred to a vehicle that had the same colored plates.
