For those having to gap rings and needing a tool that sets the rings  an inch 
or so down the bore for measuring the gap, try a 4" pvc female  adaptor.  
This is female 4" pipe threads on one side and 4" pvc male on the  other.  The 
male side fits just right in a 440/400 block, with the threaded  side catchig on 
the head deck.  It centers the ring down the bore  about 1 1/2".  
Just go to a plumbing supply house and ask for a 4" pvc female  adaptor.  
About 3 bucks.  Joe
