Main cases should be interchangeable. Trying to use the tail shaft and 
housing from the aluminum case trans may be an obstical as the tail 
shaft (not the tail shaft housing) may not fit up to the NON-OD 
internals. It has been so long since I have worked with an OD trans I 
cannot recall. I took non OD internals and case and mated them to a OD 
tailshaft and housing. So what your are suggesting should work.

Its been over 10 years since I did that, so take it for whats its worth. 
Either way, case swapping shouldnt be a problem.
