Hi
I've done a fair bit of sheet metal work and I've found the MIG is
the best option for light work. I made do with a "stitch welder" attachment
for a few years and it worked not to bad (From Eastwood restoration
supplies) it was attached to a Lincoln 230 amp Ac welder set at its lowest
setting for sheet metal (40 to 50amps). As far a rods, materials etc. Things
get a bit complicated, consult Lincoln's literature or Eutectic for rod
standards. For sheet metal all you need is a mild steel rod. With the stitch
welder I used a 5/64th" rod, for the MIG use a .022" with an Argon/Co2 mix.
This works great. The gas combo is called "Autoweld "
but the name may change between suppliers. As far as methods and techniques
this could go on for hours and you won't learn what you need from an email ,
My suggestion would be to obtain a Text book used by Vocational colleges for
Autobody,An example is Bill Tobolt's Autobody Repairing and Repainting
(printed by Goodheart and Wilcox). Its amazing what you can get from a
publication like that. The other thing is practise, practise
when I started on the MIG I used a few old doors ...cut em up and put them
together again. Different people work out different methods based on
established standards ,what works for me may not work for you.
Also a tip on paint guns..don't screw around with the old external mix high
pressure guns
go directly to HVLP (high volume low pressure). The guns are very reasonable
now
and it is a superior way to paint.

I have an old welder that needs the corrosion cleaned out of it's cable
plug holes. I know it works, but I don't know much about the sticks, flux,
and
power settings I should use on different automotive metal thickness. This
thing
weighs about 300 or more lbs. on wheels, and looks like a Lincoln, but is
not,
I forget the name, but it is from the sixties. I could use as much info as
possible from start to finish on welding. I have welded before, but never
had to
decide what materials to use, I was given the right stuff. I am trying to
set
up a real functional automotive garage for myself finally, and still need to
find a good cheap nibbler, sand blaster, and paint gun. A cutting torch, or
plasma cutter will come with more money, as will a rotisserie.
  HELP ME PLEASE!!

 Thanks, Don
