Was Re: Fw: 440 head question...now blocking X-over ports.

Larger valves and porting and polishing have nothing to do with blocking the exhaust X-over. All it does is block hot exhaust from warming the base of the carb. The warming is useful during cold weather to aid cold engine drive-away. It also allows a few extra ponies as the intake fuel/air mixture is colder when it reaches the combustion chamber.

The passage that is blocked off is at an exhaust valve. What it does is warm the intake quickly to help idle. Blocking it off does not harm the engine in any way. You will just have to keep goosing it until it warms enough to idle. Again.....Unless you are installing larger valves and porting and polishing there is really no reason to block them off.

Thanks folks for the replys, but I
am still a little befuddled, I
know the port that goes accross the intake, under the carb
can be
blocked off with an intake gasket, What I am concered
with is the big
semi-circle holes arounf that port. in the head. looks like
he** and a
trap for dirt and small parts. Are those also covered
by the
aftermarket intake gasket??

To Chick: are you saying that instead of the stock
type valley cover/
intakje gasket combo, that there is available a seperate
valley cover
and seperate intake gaskets? . Thanks...........MO
