RE: {Chrysler 300} Correct pump for 1957 C300?



The 300C has two ceramic filters, one at each carburetor. The 300D has no ceramic filters at the carburetors but it has the filter attached to the bottom of the pump. The pump with the filter is for a 58. By the way, the glass bowl, filter and attaching clamp on the 58 fuel pump interchange with the 57. Merle Wolfer covers the various 1958 fuel pumps.

I own 57N2972.  I got it at mileage 47,XXX, I seem to remember. I had NO heating issue until gasahol came about 1992 or so.  The fuel pump was gettin "iffy" at this time, so I started looking.  There was a pump that said it was "factory"  with a stone filter attached at bottom of pump.

Were there ever of these pumps issued by Chrysler ???  I got a regular fuel pump and have used it since, but have wondered about  the stone filtered pump with the stone filters on the carbs,also.

Yes the notched pump is the one for the 300C.  I learned of this about 12 years ago when having vapor lock problems with my C in hot weather with A/C compressor engaged.  I believe it was Jeff Carter who enlightened me to this fact and I purchased the notched pump and had it installed.  It was supposedly a higher performance pump (in what parameter I am not certain).  It worked well but I have to admit that I backed off from driving the car in summer OK weather to fully test it out.  Then when I replaced the A/C system with a rotary A/C compressor I was getting vapor lock issues with ambient temps above 95 degrees F and called Hemi Hot Heads who convinced me to switch to an electric fuel pump and that solved the vapor lock problem.   So I am not trying to sell folks on electric fuel pumps but just clarifying the notched mechanical fuel pump for the C which I stumbled upon (pardon the pun) with vapor lock issues.  I also learned from Jeff at that time that modern fuels burn at an average of 200 degrees F higher than what was available for the day when these cars were new.  Hope this helps!  300’ly, Rob Kern

I just looked up Wayne Graefen’s 300C Handbook and there is a whole section on this.  The notched pump Carter M2610S was introduced after engine # 3NE572962.  It also says replacement pumps with the same number didn’t have the notch.  So, Chrysler did introduce it and then decided it wasn’t necessary after all!

 

Wayne’s book is full of detail for those that want to concourse their car, or are just curious.

Or maybe this is an aftermarket or NOSR (new old stock replacement) one-size-fits-all that Carter made available ? I doubt that Chrysler Corp built cars with a fuel pump that needed this custom treatment.

Forwarding my response to John for others who may be interested.  Seems the notch wasn’t really necessary.  If anyone does have an interference issue, just file a bit off rather than search for the “right” pump.

Hi John

 

Looks like mine attached.  Years ago, I think there was something about the number stamped on the body to identify the 300C pump but I don’t remember what that was.  As you can see, the notch doesn’t make that much difference as installed on my car but it is there to clear the front of the block.
