Dex-Merc has done me well over the years. I've heard its essentially a blend of Mercon and Dexron "technology and compatibility". The newer stuff is backwards compatible, and yeah I've heard about that type F trick too works well, especially in the cast iron units...

I once recommended type F when it was readily available. These days I use 

Dex 3. I had used both in my G, and saw no difference. Type F is the old racers trick for 727's. And ATF+4 is a total waste of money.
