I grounded through the straps by scratching off a bit of paint. That has been working on my 58 Ply for over 15 years now. Nothing wrong with adding a ground wire as well.

The problem was in our C300 while I was working with the top-mounted sending unit. I had tarpaper strips between straps and tank that got a little gas on them and bled. I never noted deterioration.
Good insulation for wear means poor ground conductance so ran a wire from sender top flange to a frame spot.

I'd think you would have to try to slop gas on top of a properly mounted tank.
Rubber seems like it would trap moisture.
Have you experienced tar paper coming apart due to gas spills?

Looking for suggestions as to what to put between the gas tank and the floor of the trunk. I saw on one generic website that original type tar paper is now replaced by a thin rubber sheet. Hopefully something I can get from a hardware store or the like. I would like to ensure there is no chance of promoting rusting of the tank or floor.
Thanks
Henry
