Lynn is correct that J spark plugs can be changed from underneath without removing the access panels. Whether or not that is the best method is personal preference. The access panels were also to assist with header and heat pipe access. Per the service manual supplement “removal of the access panel from under the front fenders will permit easy removal and installation of the exhaust manifold.” Yeah, right. I’d like to see the fella that wrote that actually try to remove or install an exhaust header. Access panels of no help whatsoever on that. They do make it easier to get the heat pipe bolts (or studs, depending on your intake). But it is also not necessary to remove the access panels to get to the heat pipes; it’s just more difficult. RamK would be the same. F/G may be different. I just jack it up enough to put it on jackstands. No need to remove the front wheels and panels. It was my understanding that the panels aren't for spark plug access. The inner fender openings were to allow the assembly line body drop to clear the air cleaners on the engine and the panels were only to cover the opening.
