Re: [Chrysler300] 1960 Shift cable.

There has to be a far better final authority than I am (are you listening, Don?), but my understanding of the "leaks-after-a-long-time-in-storage" symptom is that it is caused by an ineffective seal between the torque converter "neck" and the transmission input shaft. Either that, or the input shaft seal to the transmission case. This allows the fluid in the torque converter to seep down over time, overwhelming the fluid capacity of the transmission case. The fluid leaks out into the bell housing and drips from there. That's why it can be fine for shorter storage periods when the at-least-occasional running of the car refills the torque converter from the transmission case, leaving no overfill condition to find its way out.

Old Chevy Powerglides (including my '58) were - and still are - notorious for having this identical problem.

The only solutions, then, are to refresh the torque converter and transmission front seals, run the car every month or so, or put a bed pan under it.

would love to know the answer to that one.  My G doesn't leave a drop anywhere if you use it at least once a week, but when I put it away for an extended period of time (like winter storage) I need to put a good sized pan underneath, because after a couple of weeks, suddenly a small flood of fluid appears.  I'm assuming it is half the fluid leaking back out of the torque converter and then the level rises above where it should be in the main body of the trans, and leaks out somewhere like the downshifting/kickdown shaft that only has a (relatively) loosely fitting bushing around it, since fluid is never supposed to reach that high up.

What internal repairs can be done to prevent the converter to leak down ?

Mick & all:

As I recall from my PowerFlite leakage problem, it could not be fixed until repairs were made internally to prevent the torque converter from draining down and flooding the system beyond what it was designed to hold.

Just $0.02 (maybe less) worth.

300ers,

Thanks for all the offers of parts and suggestions about the shirt cable.  After I read all the replies I've decided to get it on a lift and see if is just a really bad leak that can be fixed with the heat tube suggestion.

If it turns out that it needs a new cable I now have leads on several used and maybe a source for a new one.

Thanks again everyone.

Mick
