Probably known already to this group but any surfacing of heads or block can move heads closer together to engine centerline upsetting manifold fit . They used to have a process to check with feeler gauge at head mating surface for equlity along the angle and that it is not sitting high on the bottom block surface etc etc . Various designs have sheet metal plate to close block , nothing to do with manifold , that is best way --And some rule of thumb about milling port face if you cut head or block . I agree todays rtv ought to cover a lot of sins but checking for gross errors in fit with no gasket probably not a bad idea . I doubt you can bend manifold in any nmeaningful way center to ends --relates to that . Cast iron bends very little .. It cracks . And height of manifold makes it a stiff beam front to back ( assuming it is cast iron?) Was leak at top or bottom of port ? Can think through why ? Big problem on chev and ford getting ports ok while still crushing block gasket at back near bellhousing . Leaks there huge PIA on chev .oil runs down bell housing , you think it is transmission leak . Had that twice --- and again on untouched sb ford . Like the chrysler plate! Need to follow rtv instruction exactly too .
