Ray, You must have an older unit. My Harbor Freight infrared reader goes up to at least 900 degrees. I've measured my exhaust manifolds (600+) and my fireplace grate (900+). The Harbor Freight one tops out @ 500°, so once the engine is normally hot you can't check at the exhaust port on the manifold, but you can on the intake side. You can also check Rad hoses for flow, the Radiator, exhaust pipes @ the back to see if both sides are about the same temp, tires while on the road, the list goes on. Also good around the house looking for air leaks, works well on windy days around windows and doors. Check how hot the air is at each register. I bought a Dodge Ram truck that had been sitting for 8 years. After cleaning the tank and replacing the internal fuel pump, it started in a few minutes. Ran rough, but started smoothing out after a few minutes. We found the right side was working well but the left side was much cooler, so not firing much. By the time we were done playing, it was all smooth and equal temps. Under $30.. much less on sale. A must have for your tool box.
