RE: [Chrysler300] Painting License Plates - Techniques???

Ryan,

One of the guys in Hemming's "Bob" at (800) 793-0781 supplies plates but
offers FREE advise on restoration.(Best 9-3 & 7-9 pm PST). That may include
a source for paint matching, etc. These guys that do the restoration
probably have a set of masking templates that aides the process. (Maybe
available, used, from Folsom Prison, do they have a web site?)

Please let me know how you make out because I will have the same problem in
a few months with my "F".

Thanks,

Danny

Thanks Dan, I appreciate your assistance. However I tend to like to do as
much of my own work as possible. Paying others to do it takes all the fun
out of it. :) I do everything but machine work, transmissions, and chroming.

Cheers.

Ryan and All,

Starting on page 194 of December-Hemming's-"Services Offered", there are no
more than six companies offering to furnish and/or refinish license plates.
Word of caution, Hemming's seems to have problems with their alphabetical
listings, so it starts with Jim's Calif. License Plates, drops back to
Key's, Leaf Springs, a couple of Leather guys, a License guy, a strip
joint, two License guys, can insurance, License guy, parking lift's. another
license guy, then on to lifts again.

You gotta' watch those car magazine guys!!!

I have 2 California cars with original black plates and I'm thinking of
restoring them. Can anyone tell me what technique was used to paint these
plates when they were produced? Does anyone have an acurate way of
reproducing the original look without painstaking brush work?

I'm thinking of stripping the plates to bare metal, fixing the dings and
imperfections, priming and painting the black background. Then, using a
peice of cotton rag or perhaps felt wrapped over a short peice of 2 x 10,
applying yellow paint to it and lowering it onto the plate so it only
touched the raised areas.

Another method that was descibed to me was to paint many thin coats of the
yellow followed by the black, then once dry, wet sand the high spots off
with a rubber wet sand block and finally polish.

Any other ideas? I'm sure someone has done this before.
