[Chrysler300] Painting Licence Plates - Techniques???

I have 2 California cars with original black plates and I'm thinking of restoring them. Can anyone tell me what technique was used to paint these plates when they were produced? Does anyone have an acurate way of reproducing the original look without painstaking brush work?

I'm thinking of stripping the plates to bare metal, fixing the dings and imperfections, priming and painting the black background. Then, using a peice of cotton rag or perhaps felt wrapped over a short peice of 2 x 10, applying yellow paint to it and lowering it onto the plate so it only touched the raised areas.

Another method that was descibed to me was to paint many thin coats of the yellow followed by the black, then once dry, wet sand the high spots off with a rubber wet sand block and finally polish.

Any other ideas? I'm sure someone has done this before.
