Re: [Chrysler300] what to do with ac

We had a brand new Novi unit in the mid 50's and an add on in a Dodge PU somewhat the same time and a '63 Mercury wagon with under dash factory A/C and they did not work well at all. One had a Tecumseh compressor and the Dodge had a York. Most common practice today with old vehicles is to retrofit a Sanden or similar rotary compressor. Compressor brackets are one big problem. Condenser size and air circulation system and evaporator sizes are marginal in most every unit I have seen. Still see a lot of motorhomes and commercial vehicles with non OE units and brackets are always a problem. But, smoother running rotarys can help. For my own equipment, if it has an RV2 compressor, that will stay.

The old Harrison and Airtemp factory installed stuff had for the most part good sizing on the evaporator and condenser. Condenser size is always important and one sized to work with R-12 will be no where near big enough to handle ann R-134A conversion except marginally so best advice is to stay with R-12 for the old iron. No better refrigerant than R-12 for a mobile A/C system.
