The early hemis had a shroud cast on the rear of the engine block to  
accommodate the use of the converter/clutch and a short bell housing used with  the 
M-6 fluid-drive transmission.
 
The shroud was later removed from the casting to allow use of the  
Power-flite and later transmissions. I think this happened in 1953, but don't  hold me 
to the year.
