Do you think he wanted a DeSoto Hemi 330.4  CI which I think may (or 
may not be) shorter? I believe the intakes are different because of it 
being shorter?

I'm no expert, but I recall the bell housings are different due to the
differences in transmissions/fluid drives/torque converters.  The bell
housing is cast with the block on one or the other series (probably the
long one you have found) and is a more typical bolt on with the later
PowerFlite series.  I would appreciate learning more about this from 
the
experts.
