Before I spent all the money to rebuild my front brakes again(shoes, 
cylinders, springs, drums) I would most certainly take a look at one of the 
disc brakes systems for our cars.  My brakes have been redone to the highest 
quality and are not even close to contemporary standards.

I am copying the listsrv to see what others have to say on this topic.  I 
know a number of them have done the disc conversion on their cars.  Judges 
at some shows may have a fit, but they are not the drivers of your car.

I have heard good reports on the AJ Brake system.

for some 300's.
