I have always heard that the hard water lead to deposits which can
clog the passages or greatly reduce the efficiency. The distilled
water supposedly does the opposite and tries to leach minerals/metals
from the cooling system and put them in solution. The lead solder
seems to be the most likely to be affected.
Does your BMW possibly have an aluminum radiator with plastic
tanks? That might account for the distilled water recommendation.
