I had a battery explode in my '67 GTX years ago.  It was a normal 27C 
tar top (except it was a plastic top).  The car ran fine, then 
wouldn't restart after a short stop.  When the final jumper cable was 
hooked up, I heard a lout pop and something hit me in the 
back.  Luckily I was facing away, connecting the jumper to the boost 
vehicle at the time.  The battery top ended up some 20'-30' away, and 
I went looking for a quick douche, since my back was starting to 
itch.  That T-shirt came apart about 3 washes later.  I put it down 
to an internal open circuit that was bridged and sparked when the 
jumper was connected.  i always try to use at least goggles if not a 
face shield when I mess with batteries now.  They are literally bombs 
waiting for the right circumstances to go off.  There is danger from 
the acid as well as the physical trauma of high velocity parts flying around.
