I have told my story here in the last year, and Batteries do explode. 
Maybe not in the way that you might think. It could be just out-gassing 
from overcharging or an overloaded condition. The gas coming off the 
vents WILL explode in your face, which is what happened to Richard, 
told below. Usually, it's from prolonged cranking with a weak battery 
and then hooking up cables or jump-box to the posts to assist....Bang! 
That is the main reason that you never hook the Ground cable to the 
battery post but rather hook it to the engine as far away from the 
Battery as possible.

As to "Exploded while driving", it may be that with the hood closed, on 
the road, there just might not be enough air flow in the Battery area 
to disperse the gasses and eventually a spark from something sets it 
off.
