There may indeed have been a problem with the rear springs. In May '58 I
bought a nice C300 from the original selling dealer in Wichita, with about
55,000 miles on it (original owner was a salesman!). A year later, now with
about 70,000 miles on it, I noticed a couple of broken rear leaves, and upon
investigation found two bad ones on each side. As far as I know the car was
never abused, so there may have been a problem with the leaves being a bit
too brittle.
