I don't know what a vane machine is. If its what we call a chassis  dyno 
then I know.  In 1960 I had a Dodge Dart Phoenix with a Ram Induction 
383.  I raced it at the Drag Strip.  I always had the car tuned on the 
Chassis Dyno.  It would show Horse Power at the rear wheels.  Part of 
the Power tuning was having a gas Analyzer in the tail pipes.  They 
would run the Car to max horse power then move the timing until the 
engine reached its max power.  If the engine ran to rich or lean they 
would change the metering rods or the jets themselves.  The also 
modified the distributor advance.  I felt it was very beneficial to have 
everything just right to get the max out of the engine.   I hope this is
