Subject: PPG Glass Terms
There are several different terms used on the PPG supplied glass in our forwardlook cars. A very nice 1957 explanation of these terms is to be found at:

Of course the terms apply to years other than 1957, however that was the source of the info.
If anyone has anything that explains how to interpret the plant and date codes on PPG glass, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. Anyone work in the glass industry and have access to some old info like that?

Hi. I have a 1955 Chrysler Windsor convertible. I would like to find out the NAGS (National Auto Glass Standards) number for this windshield, so I can search for a new one. The Chrysler part # for the Solex (tinted) windshield is 1597570. It looks like this windshield fits all models of 1955 Chrysler and DeSoto convertibles...but not the hardtops or 300's. This is to let you all know that I have a Mopar installation instruction sheet for installing manual antenna, part # 1769436 and templates for the following:
'57 Plymouth P30, P31
'58 Ply LP1, LP2
'59 Ply MP1, MP2
'57, 58 Dodge all
'59 Dodge MD1, MD2, MD3
'57, 58 Firesweep
'57, 58, 59 DeSoto Firedome and Fireflite
(revised 8-58 so there must have been an earlier location)
'59 DeSoto MS1
'57, 58, 59 Chryslers (all)
(revised 8-58 so there must have been an earlier location)
I also have one printed only "Desoto, Chrysler" that is entirely different from the others in shape and I will have to try to figure out what it is intended for. It may not be for the same antenna as it is on a different color and age of paper with a different print font.
The instruction sheet also mentions Imperial but there is no template for Imperial.
Anyone needing any of these templates is welcome to send me a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) and I will photo copy the instruction sheet and appropriate template and mail back to you.

I attended a car show on Vancouver Island with my
300F on Sunday Aug 4. There were approx 350 cars of
all makes and configurations. Classes were divided by
decade and split between stock and modified. My 300
won first place in 60's stock class beating out
resored Corvettes and many Red Chevrolets and
countless Mustangs. It was the uniqueness of the 300
that drew the attention. Although I prefer to show a
car with the hood down I couldn't get it closed all
day because of the crowds. My car is unrestored with
114,000 miles so it shows some age. To have it capture
a first against restored cars speaks for the status a
letter car holds among car enthusiests. Judging was
not on points but done by committees. The show was
well represented by various other Mopar products from
the late 40,s to present including a Viper and a
Prowler.

caused by the methanol / ethanol "enhanced" fuels that are so common today?
A technical note in a recent issue of Road & Track seemed to indicate that
some of the rubber parts on older cars might be negatively affected.

-My C300 drew attention in Canadian gas stations in 1960. We were towing a
14' travel trailer which was not strange but the twin carbureted V8 engine
was what brought all the attention. We crossed into Canada via the ferry at
Port Angeles, visited the Columbia Ice Fields, Calgary and back down into
the US. The gas station fellows across the Trans Canada said that V8's were
not all that common and twin carburetors they had never seen.

My biggest problem out her in CA. I keep sinking my Brass Floats on my sending units. I
have changed each of my cars at least twice. My motor home has three tanks and all three
have sunk. Just put a new one on my Superbird last week. The only ones that I have not
changed more than once are the ones I replaced the brass floats with plastic ones. And
now I can't find any more plastic ones.

I have a used Midland Ross and Bendix unit.
The Bendix unit has a tear in the rubber boot
and does not work. The Midland Ross unit
is from a parts car and may also need to
be rebuilt.
Does anyone still make a rebuilding kit for
either unit? I am somewhat afraid of buying
one that is NOS because the rubber may be
old and tear easy.
The one I have in the car was rebuilt by Arrow,
but I understand they are out of business. The
push rod on the rebuilt unit was shorter than the
previous one which makes the brake pedal go
closer to the floor board, but it still works OK.
Was there two or more lengths to the pushrods?
It seems like there should be one length only?

This has really got my attention. When I lived in Calif. 10 years ago I
used
brass floats on everything. Have they changed the gas formula that much??
I made it a practice to check new floats in gas, water and anti freeze
before
installing them. Never had any problems, not even a defective float.

Not being a carburetor professional, this might be BS...BUT the re-
formulated fuels are lower density, hence brass float might sink too
far--beyond bendability to adjust. If methanol is being used,
methanol dissolves the solder sealing brass float. Indy had lots of
problems when methanol was mandated as sole fuel in old days.
If any one detects a virus attached to me, PLEASE tell ME!! There
hace been many attacks recently...and like B.O., the offender is last
to know...
When "butterfly breath" fuels were being brought on in the late 70's,
my 300's had all kinds of weird reactions. Seems though, the rubber
parts got seasoned to it and they ran again...just hotter with lower
gas mileage, due to lower energy content and longer flame burn.
Gas now is really great stuff, compared to the experiments then. It
still has lower energy content...and doesn't burn!!
