Examine that latch assy and see exactly how it works. What has to happen to release the gear? do you have to have a part slide, while you do that, have someone pull from the outside or shove the door from the inside. The gear may be just stuck, released but not allowing movement. A jerk or kick might allow it to turn. I had a door like that once on me '65 300L. Still do actually.
