I failed to mention this, before, but on the website's thread, I mentioned
the possibility of using a cutting torch on the stuck latch.

Used carefully, by a Pro, the torch protocol (probably aided by an air-chisel) might be preferable to trying to drill out the mounting screws, from the interior
of the rear quarter panel.

You (all-) will still need to obtain a replacement latch assembly in order to
have the door operate, if its lower gears have failed.

There is (on 57+s) a sliding backing-plate behind the sheet metal of the lock
pillar which allows the latch-striker to be repositioned, slightly.

Dunno how that inner mechanism would affect the drilling out of the three
mounting screws---you'll have to buy replacement mounting screws, too,
no matter how the door is replaced; mounting screws are available in the
aftermarket and on the Evilpay.

Just make certain that the replacement door latch has decent condition lower
gear teeth on it, before you buy one.

Everything is moving as far as it should, inside that latch is a spring and a large piece that locks the star wheel in place. Something broke and while you move the tabs on the assembly itself, nothing on the inside moves. Another list member emailed me, had the same thing happen to his Desoto and he wound up taking out the backseat and side panel and drilling out the screws holding the striker.
I'm hoping to not have to do that, we'll see tonight.

Nick:
I looked at the door latch on my 56 and the only thing I can think of is to try from inside the door to slide the catch that holds the door handle in place. You may be able to slide it far enough to the rear to remove the handle. Look at the handle on the right side and it may give you a clue. Other than that, I would have to look at the problem first hand to think of something else.

I went to get into my 56 Plymouth today and the  door wouldn't open.
After I got home, I was able to get the door panel off and the outer door handle. Something is broken in the latch assembly so when you pull on the outer handle or the inner handle, the mechanism moves, but whatever piece inside that mechanism that unlocks the star wheel doesn't move, so the door won't open. I have another mechanism to put in which is how I figured out something inside that mechanism is broke.
 Any ideas? I've been messing with it for almost 2 hours now.
While climbing in and out like Bo Duke would be fun, I'm sure it would lose it's appeal quite soon.
