true on 57-up gm's and dual resistor mopars. fords start at reduced voltage as do fwdlk era 12v cars. they car run without a ballast for a fiarly long time before the points are hurt
considering many have swapped coils over the years- the factory specs of resistance are out the door and just a suggestion- most replacement ballasts run in the 1-5 ohm range- depending on mfg'r and application
