If I recall correctly, the
bronze Ford windshields were the result of a good electrical
conductor (Gold !) used for their electric
defroster option.
I don't know if that was
continued.
It was obviously expensive. It sucked
the amps like their was no tomorrow, and
I don't think Ford wished to heavy wire
every car in case that application was chosen.

Thanks to Lou, Neil and others for educating me that
green shading is once again available in auto glass. I'm guessing that
what must have happened over the last 45 years is that the glass industry has
developed new compositions for the laminate plastic layer in glass which do not
alter the perception of the human eye when viewing a red or green traffic
light. So now we have blue, bronze, green. I do recall back
around the very late '90s there were a few very bronze looking windshields
coming at me on the highway in assorted Ford products from Crown Vics to
Lincolns.
In my family as I grew up we had a '61 Pontiac with green
shaded windshield that I maintained religiously. Then we got a '65 Chevy
and the blue shade of the windshield looked positively weird at the time.
Yeah, dad bought from the closest dealership, not by brand. He did have a
Dodge and Plymouth earlier and a Chrysler Newport and Plymouth VIP
later.
Those of you who have seen a recent production windshield
that was obviously green, was it a green similar to what we had back in OUR
day?
Maybe, just maybe, if we petition the reproduction glass
companies with our need for authenticity and originality, they will tint
windshields that have pre '65 or so applications with the new green
laminate.
