Re: [FWDLK] eBay '58 Fury (was Digest etc etc)

That guy with the sleeved FP block would be me and it sure was driven to shows, including "Tulsarama", Carlisle, etc. Some 5,000 miles this past season.Anyone in need of another FP boat anchor, I know where there is one although it will be tough to haul out to the road. Most any early 318 is rebuildable, racers used to bore them .120 over with no problems and regards to performance, The 58 Fury I had in the early 60's never was beat by a 55-57 Chevy and all my friends sure tried! They always got me off the line but after 40 MPH all they saw was my taillights! Only thing that ever beat me was a 60 Plymouth Sonoramic Commando ex NYS Police car that really flew! And who said that they got tired of the sound of the dual four barrels? I think that is about the greatest sound in the automotive universe. It was 36 years between Dual Furys for me and I never forgot that sound! Dick W. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill K." <pontiac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

It's complete, relatively solid (particularly for a midwestern example of a car that suffered greatly from rust issues), and would be a relatively easy restoration. It needs a few panels, but nothing major, and it has the wrong engine, which can be found, or cloned. The only thing in really bad shape is the interior, and these cars are so popular I have to think a guy can redo it and get it right without too much trouble.

Plus it's the real deal. You could hardly ask for a better starting point, especially now that the car is 50 years old, for a car that didn't exactly grow on trees even when it was new.

The over $10,000 bid price it had the last I looked proves that if you have some idea how to actually repair the car, then you know it's well worth it. There's nothing wrong with paying someone else to do all your maintenance and not even knowing where the valve stems are to put air in the tires, but having loads of money doesn't make someone an automatic car expert.

Selling actual junk the last few years, if there's one thing I've found, guys who actually build them usually want the best they can find to start with, and they're willing to pay for it. Junk is the Fury I found years ago - mangled in the back where the frames always rot, trim falling off, glass gone, interior gone, hood gone, intake gone, motor probably full of water and rust. But I know a guy who started with an FP block just as bad and drives that car to shows all summer. Had to sleeve two of the bores to make it useable. I guess junk is also in the eye of the beholder. If the mangled mess I just described was a convertible, I could find someone who'd buy it and build it - I've sold lots of them that rough.

I assume you are talking about me. What is there about this car that makes it worth so much.

I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the most ignorant things I've ever read on this email list. But I've come to learn in dealing with old cars that some people just can't comprehend actually fixing one, if it's not shiny and pretty and ready to go when they see it, then it's junk. I've seen plenty of worse cars than that saved by people, all it takes is a little talent and a little common sense. Which the over $10,000 current bid on the auction car proves.

So if you guys have junk like that around I'll be more than happy to come collect it for you. I won't even charge you for taking it away.

What's that? You don't have any and don't know where to find any? Thats what I thought.

A car in this shape no engine or the wrong engine makes no difference. Still
junk.
