According to the '55-'56 service manual, the standard-issue quantity of spring leaves (per side) is 4 - except Suburbans which received 6. If the "heavy-duty" suspension was ordered, then the cars received 6 leaves and the Suburban a 7th leaf. I agree with Dave Homstad that 4 springs are too wimpy. My '55 Belvedere had a 5th leaf added per side years ago by my grandfather. It provides the car a healthy stance (just a slight pitch-up in the rear) and a good ride. Why 5 leaves per side was not offered in between 4 and 6 leaves I don't know - unless it was to minimize complexity and perhaps they just put Suburban springs on when a sedan/coupe/convertible customer requested the HD suspension? Whatever - but definitely would not recommend 4 leaves per side.
