[FWDLK] Oil Filters

Let me start by saying I am a third generation mechanic. My father and Grandfather are auto mechanics and I am an aircraft mechanic. I was raised listening to discussions about who makes the best filters, parts, etc. I have always relied on the Hacksaw test for oil filters. My local Autozone has a display where they cut open one of every filter they sell and you can compare them side by side. Fram, while not the lowest price filter they sell, is certainly the poorest quality. Everything inside the filter is paper-even the ends of the filter. They have actually glued cardboard on the end of the element rather than the crimped-on metal ends all the other brands use. I have performed this in the past with several different filters at my own expense. I have always used Napa filters. I know they are manufactured by Wix, but where ever I have lived there is a Napa nearby to purchase filters. The next filter I wil! l buy and cut open is Pennzoil. I recently heard of an oil change only shop that installed this filter on two seperate Dodge Cummins diesel trucks, only to have both of them come apart in use and cause engine failure.   Thanks for all the great info I get from this list. It's truly a valuable resource!
Tony
