I have read various web pages about the fram filters and there are many
people that say it is all BS.  I can say from personal experience with my
Dodge Caravan 3.0 V6 that the Fram filters, when I use them in that vehicle,
exhibit the drain back problem.  The complaint is that the design of the
bypass 9flapper) valve allows unfiltered oil to drain back into the crank
case when you  shut the motor off.  How do I know this? simple the 3.0
Mitsubishi engine uses a very small hyd lifter that sits inside the rocker
arm itself.  The are very susceptible to oil contamination and will begin to
tick loudly (both cold and hot) when the oil gets dirty. An oil change
always gets rid of the ticking.  Sometimes the ticking would go away for
only a week or so other times it would not tick at all between oil changes.
I began to pay attention to the brand of filter I was using and the ticking
always re-occurred very quickly when I used a Fram. I have stopped using the
Fram oil filters and the lifter ticking has almost completely disappeared,
it does come back if I let too many miles build up between changes but it is
now months later instead of days when i put a Fram in.
