Safety first!!!?? I had seat belts in my customized 51 Ford in 1957. Ford had a safety campaign going on and I wanted me and family to be safe. So I got 2 kits and installed em, complete with those LARGE washers that attempted to spread the stress over the floor pan some. And put em in all carz I had afterwards- except collector carz I have owned since about 1983 when I bot that 51 Merc. BUT I have NO seat belts in my 56 Sport Suburban and have driven it thousands of miles... NO seat belts partly cause I dont wanna mess with the floor pan and partly cause I am not sure they will do too much good. The Burb is a 4 dr so the front seat back is rigid- but HOW rigid??????? Likewise the sliding floor track, it seems to 'just' catch as it is and I believe that on hard impact it will simply slide and there my gut is getting squished like tube of toothpaste- uuuuuuugh! So I count on very defensive driving and the mass of the car and full frame to keep me somewhat safe. I would LIKE seat belts, but not until I know they are really safe. In other words, a system of safety? Simply IMHO Lars |
