"The engine number is stamped on a boss at the top side of the cylinder
block just back of the water pump...

"The engine numbers will provide the following information:  "R" represents
the 1961 Model.  "36" represents the 361 cu. in. displacement.  "38"
represents 383 cu. in. displacement.  "41" represents 413 cu. in.
displacement.  The next digit is the month built and the last digit is the
day built..."

>From my own experience, it usually requires some cleaning and degreasing to
see these numbers clearly.  Also, on air conditioned cars, the compressor is
located above the engine number boss making it difficult to read.
