Re: [FWDLK] newbie looking at 57 ply Savoy 2 dr sedan

ron knows the cars!  the red one i included was a sedan, that had a 57 2drht donor for the entire roof clip and windshield frame, i drilled the original spot welds after un-sweatting the lead to expose them, with a good eye and a little measurement, the windshield frame will work as intended at the factory.  though some may say otherwise, the cowl structure and sheetmetal, as well as the 1-piece floor sheetmetal is the same across the board, from 2drht/sedan and 4drht/sedan... the differences are which body mount provisions are used, under structural support, and the cross support above the floor surface and side buttresses on hardtops.

i did use a 4drht for anothe conversion- that untilized the original 58 windshield frame, but the donor in that case was a 59 sport fury- in which case the roof structure was fabricated to a structurally superior design, and a section of a sedan roof used to extend the 59 roof designed to work with the "bubble" windshield.

another one that became somewhat famous in our world was my 59 belv 2drht i rear clipped with a 58, and everything else swapped, to make it the only 58 plymouth with a bubble [58 desoto/dodge/chry and all 59 hardtop] winshield.  that one however became what it was because it had alot of hands in it that should have stuck to a maximum of turning a key, not a wrench!

4drht: the inner qtr structure of the 59 sport fury, including glass and mech, is shroud with the skin of the former rear doors

Jim's 4dr-to-2dr conversion was made from a 4dr HT, since the windshield frame is the same for both.

Jim knows what he's doing and has the smarts to pull this off successfully. Most folks don't. That's why so many well intentioned conversion projects end up being sold for parts or sent to the bone yard. There is a 60 Chrysler on ebay right now that the owner lost interest in after cutting the roof off.

That photo car used to be a four door sedan?  Wow!

There was a '59 Dodge convertible at the WPC Nat'ls in Sacramento this summer that started life as a two door post.  It was pretty amazing. Top from a sixties Chrysler.  No X member, but the frame was reinforced in different ways.

BUT not a project for the shade tree mechanic, which I believe was the original question.

thanks nick, and well, john would miss out on a body structurally superior to factory design, well at least one of mine.

the exner design needed a few modifications to eliminate the typical flex the hardtops all have.  converted sedans are no different than rusted originals that needed a full qtr replaced, or major sections of the floor pans, or any rusted car that has been repaired for that matter.
this "4dr sedan" doesnt need a cage to keep the body from twisting when the front wheels are fighting to stay on the ground

one of the few i did since a few said it couldnt happen.... all while 5 or 6 rust-free genuine 2drht's await resto in the garage line-up!

I don't know about that, ever seen the one Jim Rawa did converting a 4 door to a 2 door. I'd have no issues owning that car. It's sweet looking and all done correctly.

Everyone:

I would never consider owning, even if free, any MoPar that someone has attempted to convert to anything.  A two door hard top, ex two door sedan, would never grace my driveway.
