Re: [FWDLK] Parking Brake Adjustment

I have to agree with Dave.

I used to be afraid of doing someting horrible to the brakes by trying
to adjust them myself.

I evntually bought a dedicated brake adjuser
too--make the job fairly easy.

If your car's brakes seem to be pulling to one side, or are a little
'loose' feeling, you just need to jack up the front end and also the
rears to adjust the brakes.

On the fronts, if the car pulls to one side, that side's drum probably
is adjusted tighter than the other side.

You want to have the fronts (and I presume the rears, too) to be
adjusted so that you hear a light constant resistance when the wheel is
spun around.

The change in the wheel's spinning resistance
is very obvious; you just want to play with that star-adjuster until you
are satisfied that you have obtained your best constant
sliding-resistance noise on both brakes.

Give the car a test drive, and the brakes should operate well/better.

Larry,

It’s not hard. They have a star wheel just like all the Mopar brakes in the late 60s. The procedure is in the Shop Manual, in the Brakes section. When I have them apart, I usually place a film of grease on the threaded section of the star wheel and on the adjusting sleeve so they don’t rust up tight a few years later.

If the linings are worn out, you can have new linings bonded on you old shoes by any competent brake re-lining service. Just make sure they use the proper thickness material (5/32 inch).

Subject: [FWDLK] Parking Brake Adjustment

Is there an easy way to adjust the parking brake on a 60 Chrysler (has the integrated transmission parking brake)?  Mine has newer shoes (which are hard to find - does anyone have any sources?), but need adjusted.

Thanks,

Larry (Akron)
