I have to agree with Dave. I used to be afraid of doing someting horrible to the brakes by trying to adjust them myself. I evntually bought a dedicated brake adjuser too--make the job fairly easy. If your car's brakes seem to be pulling to one side, or are a little 'loose' feeling, you just need to jack up the front end and also the rears to adjust the brakes. On the fronts, if the car pulls to one side, that side's drum probably is adjusted tighter than the other side. You want to have the fronts (and I presume the rears, too) to be adjusted so that you hear a light constant resistance when the wheel is spun around. The change in the wheel's spinning resistance is very obvious; you just want to play with that star-adjuster until you are satisfied that you have obtained your best constant sliding-resistance noise on both brakes. Give the car a test drive, and the brakes should operate well/better.
