All my cars had this problem of having to crank a lot after the car sat in the garage for a week or two. The carbs were dry and needed to be filled with gas again, then it would start. I have installed a universal electric fuel pump in all my cars with a push button switch under the dash. Works great. I concluded that the gas was simply evaporating. Our carbs are VENTED, not sealed like later cars, and with fuel-injection it's not an issue. So there are no parts to repair or replace, it's just the way our cars are made - PRE-EMISSION CONTROLS.
