Re: [FWDLK] Price Insanity

A couple reasons:

[1] I was at the Portland Swap Meet a few years ago, and watched while D-C reps told a vendor he couldn't sell coffee mugs without D-C authorization, which he wouldn't get.

[2] The aborted letter-car grille project, stopped for lack of D-C cooperation in granting a license. [Maybe some of you 300 guys can add to that story.]

Why do people think DC is reluctant to license reproduction parts? Just
because there are no parts being reproduced should not mean the fault is
with DC and their licensing agreements. Given that Chrysler produced fewer
cars per year than Chevrolet on its own should tell you why there are no
parts - there is no viable market. And the fact that parts that are
reproduced cost so much should also tell why.

Just as with parts when new, costs of production are based on the total cost
of tooling the part divided by the number of parts that could be sold.
Thus if it costs a million dollars to tool a part, and the market for that
part is about 1,000 units, the tooling cost per part is $1,000,000 divided
by 1,000 - or $1,000. Manwhile a Ford or Chev reproducer can tool a part
for $1,000,000 and have a potential market of 10,000 or even 100,000 units.
Which reduseces the tooling cost per part to $100 or $10, respectively..

It's called business - free enterprise. No business can exist without sales
and profits. Thus no firm is eager to produce parts no one will buy or
parts that cost more to produce than the expected retail price.

The Forward Look era vehicles, sadly, have a poor track record for survival
due to rust, for starters, Thus there are few surviiors. And the fewer
the number of survivors, the smaller the potential market. The muscle car
era has a high survival rate, plus hugher vehicle market values, which
results in more parts being reproduced.

She-from-whom-the-receipts-must-be-hidden [old Indian name] is shocked at
the prices on eBay. She's prevailed on me to not get carried away, to
pick
a price I'm comfortable with and not go over it... by too much anyway.

There have been a few times that I paid more than what I wanted, once was
a
NOS turn signal mechanism for my '58 DeSoto as mine had just gone out. I
was getting tired of people honking and waiving that my left turn signal
was
on.

At the Portland Swap Meet last weekend, there were some cars that seemed
to
go at reasonable prices, some overpriced junk that didn't sell, and a lot
of
dickering for parts.

Another take on the situation-- I've got some Brand F products, and the F
Corp. encourages restoration of their cars by licensing repro parts.
Shoot,
I could put my F brand together easily and reasonably with all new parts.
The Got Mine Corp. is equally favorable. WHY IS D-C SO RETICENT TO ALLOW
NORS PARTS FOR OUR CARS? They're finally granting some licenses for
'60's-'70's muscle cars. Are they ashamed of our Forward Look stuff?

He may be able to make hundreds but he can't sell them at this price
every time. sooner or later, he runs out of deep pockets, and then the
price falls. He'll keep making them as long as he makes a profit., so
make him a preferred seller on eBay and you'll get notified each time
he posts an item. When the price finally gets into your range, you can
get it.
