I have an old [1955] Motor Trend article about how to make your own padded dash. They shaved down the foam to avoid the problem you're describing.

The distinctive quality element, of/on Just Dashes, is the thinness of
the padding, over the dash-guage housing.

If you've ever seen (even a GOOD-quality) 'aftermarket'  padded dash,
you will typically see a rather 'thick' , rounded cross-section
over the top/front of the dash, and/or around the speaker-area.

J.D. AIN'T cheap, but, you really do get, what you pay for.
